Cyclone Yaas Relief: Delivering Water and Hope to Maipith Island, Sundarbans
"Water, water everywhere, not a drop to drink"—this haunting line became a harsh reality for the people of Bhubaneswari, Maipith Island, in the Sundarbans, following the devastating impact of Cyclone Yaas. With floodwaters contaminating freshwater sources and infrastructure severely damaged, access to safe drinking water became one of the community's most urgent needs.
Despite overwhelming challenges—rising COVID-19 cases, lockdown restrictions, and relentless rains—AIM Foundation rose to the occasion. On May 28, 2021, a dedicated team reached Bhubaneswari with 4,000 litres of safe drinking water and essential dry food supplies, providing immediate relief to the cyclone-affected residents.
This humanitarian effort was made possible by the relentless spirit of volunteers and the generous support of individuals and organizations. The young field workers of Ashar Alo played a critical role, working tirelessly in adverse conditions to ensure supplies reached those in need.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Mr. Sunirmal Roy (OC, Bankshall Court) and Mr. Salil Kumar Roy (OC, Burrabazar) for facilitating the procurement of food and relief materials during the strict lockdown period. Their assistance was crucial in overcoming logistical barriers.
We also thank the Income Tax Sports and Recreation Club for providing storage space for relief supplies, helping streamline distribution to the affected areas.
A special note of appreciation goes to the students (both present and alumni) of Purulia Ramkrishna Mission, whose energy, discipline, and commitment ensured that food packets and relief items were efficiently organized and dispatched.
This effort once again highlighted the power of collective action and compassion. In the face of disaster, the people of the Sundarbans were not alone. With unity and empathy, we delivered not just water—but also hope.
